Escape to the Tropics Without Leaving New York

Source: Flickr, Telstar-Logistics

This is normally the time of year when we’d be shivering and yelling obscenities at Mother Nature, praying for Spring to grace us with its presence. Alas, winter has taken a vacation, yet somehow you’re too broke to take one yourself. But all hope is not lost. MyCityWay is here to show you how to escape to the tropics without ever leaving New York.

Lani Kai: For those who need some aloha in their lives, this Hawaiian restaurant and lounge is the perfect place to get in the spirit. The menu is a compilation of traditional Hawaiian fare with an East Coast twist, and the cocktail list has all the island favorites alongside unique concoctions. There’s also a happy hour Monday through Friday from 5-7 p.m. for those who want to escape on a budget. 525 Broome Street (in between Sullivan and Thompson Streets)

Power Drinking: The Five Best Cocktails in Washington, DC

Cheers! Source: Stuart Webster, Flickr

We love drinking in our nation’s capital. There’s just something in the air that makes everything taste a little better, and the bar scene is far more impressive than it gets credit for by its fellow East Coast cities. Whether you want to get drunk with power or just a little drunk, MyCityWay has a list of the five best cocktails in Washington, DC to help you get there.

Bitter Sweet Manhattan at Bourbon: Normally, we’d say it’s best not to mess with perfection, but since when do people listen to us? At its Glover Park location, Bourbon mixes up a combination of Tennessee whiskey, sweet vermouth, chocolate bitters and orange that makes for an amazing twist on one of our favorite classic cocktails. Well played, Bourbon. You’ll be seeing us again soon. 2348 Wisconsin Avenue

Best Bites: Mixed Plate Lunch At Diamond Head Grill in Honolulu

If you’ve been to Hawaii, you know all about the plate lunch. It’s a medley of meats and starches that perfectly represents the mix of cultures that the 50th state is all about. In Honolulu, there might be no better place to pick up some tasty protein and dense carbs than Diamond Head Grill. Plate lunches are far from haute cuisine, but they’re filling, comforting and delicious. I still remember the sweet and salty char siu pork, the juicy teriyaki chicken and, of course, the hamburger patty with gravy. The rice and salad are almost cosmetic, serving to fill up empty spaces in the container (and your stomach). It seems like a heavy meal for a tropical location, but when you’re spending the day diving, snorkeling, surfing and hiking, it’s the fuel you need to power through the afternoon.

Make Don Draper Proud: Take on New York City, Mad Men-Style

First round is on us, guys.

What we’d give for a night out with Don Draper. Not only does the man know how to party, but he knows how to do it in style. Unfortunately, he’s just a fictional character on a TV series that has been on hiatus for far too long (hurry up, March 25th!), but that small detail doesn’t mean you can’t hit the town like the man himself. So dust off your best duds because MyCityWay is showing you how to take on New York Mad Men-style.

Pittsburgh Then & Now

Pittsburgh Then & Now from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Cities are constantly changing, as if they are living things. Pittsburgh is no different. Once a thriving steel town, then a struggling Rust Belt city, Pittsburgh is seeing a resurgence thanks to infrastructure developments, a commitment to the arts and some of the more beautiful urban planning in the United States. This slideshow in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette gives us a fantastic view into the city’s past and how it has evolved. Rather than just showing a series of photos, the editors have juxtaposed images of iconic locations around Pittsburgh and allowed readers to see how things have changed (while, in many ways, staying much the same). Whether you live in Pittsburgh, have visited or know little about the Steel City, the images are fantastic look into the heart of a proud city and a wonderful celebration of urban renewal.
